  • From the manor, to the stages

From struggling university students to a successful music group performing and selling out shows - proof as to why you should do what you enjoy! The trio - Danny Graft, Jonny Dutch & Scotty Stacks - hail from Beckenham (South London). They started off as university students, attempting to live a normal life, however, that clearly proved not to be for them. Luckily, they discovered that they all had a real talent for music & thus formed 'The Manor'! Since the formation, they have released a free mix tape in 2011, followed by 2 more free mix tapes by 2013. Even though the mix tapes got shown love by the locals, they wasn't really breaking ground in the national market... so the boys had a cunning plan to announce a 'retirement' album in 2015 called 'Don't Do What We Did'. However, the success of this album reignited The Manor's hunger as the preorders for the album alone boosted the boys to number 5 in the iTunes hip-hop album charts! From there, it has been crazy... performing at venues such as Koko & Electric Brixton, featuring on Soccer AM and releasing another album in 2016 - 'Weak Days, Strong Nights'. Currently, The Manor have big plans in the woodwork... they have a BIG headliner planned for early 2018 - we will keep you updated! Also, Scotty has began a new venture with Taiwanese style street food company, Tiger Bites (@TigerBitesBAO) which opens up shop next week in London! Whilst you're at it, follow @loudpacking !

  • Productivity tips from young entrepreneurs

Below is a list of various tips from young entrepreneurs to help you become a more productive individual! 1) Set deadlines! 24 year old founder of Influencer Connect, Michael Pomposello suggests setting deadlines for every task! “A task I estimate will take 15 minutes to complete will usually be done in 10 or 15 since I am focused on getting that done during the set time. Without setting a deadline I may wander and do other things causing this one task to take 30 or even 45 minutes.” 2) Always make time for yourself! Selena Narayanasamy, the 29 year old founder of Orthris states that you need to take care of your health! “You have to build in time to workout and manage your health. A typical day for me involves a set number of working hours, time to actually make or grab something healthy to eat, and I schedule in (yes, actually schedule in) my workout hours. Even though I’m working less, I have a higher output and I’m more responsive and helpful to my clients.” 3) Leave plenty of time to commute Ted Lawlor, 20 year old founder of If Only They Knew, suggests that allowing for extra time for your commute to work is a great way to dodge the rush-hour traffic and therefore avoid the stresses/anxieties that come with it! Doing this will make you feel more at ease and ready for work when you arrive at your workplace. 4) Ask yourself the following question: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” Steve Jobs revealed in a speech to Stanford University in 2005 that this is a question he asks himself every morning. He suggests that if the answer to the above question is "no" then you will need to make changes in your life! 5) Help somebody else A good way to reduce the naturally selfish, tunnel vision that we face on a day-to-day basis, it can help to stop and think about helping somebody else. A good way to do this is to give change to a homeless person or bring some chewing gum/sweets into work for your colleagues. 6) Set aside time for fun activities after work or on the weekend 34 year old Tim Halberg (founder of Tim Halberg Photography) suggests that not only is this a good way to breakaway from work but also to set yourself a deadline of when to finish work. “Schedule activities outside of work, like a round of golf in the afternoon. I’ve found this forces me to get my work done in time to get out the door. It’s funny how much you can get done when presented with a hard deadline. I discovered this by taking a two week backpacking trip and realising my business was caught up before I left and that nothing died while I was gone. I decided I needed to recreate this as a normal piece of my weekly schedule.” This article was adapted from Life Hack and can be found here: https://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/incredible-productivity-advice-given-21-successful-young-entrepreneurs.html

  • The future of Bank Cards: Fingerprint Scanners!

Millions of bank cards around the world have the contactless technology that allows users to buy a variety of items with a tap of a card! However, Visa & Mastercard have plans to release "Biometric Cards" which are cards with fingerprint scanners, that work in the same way as Apple Pay works on iPhones. Mastercard's Executive Vice President, Bob Reany, says Biometric cards will have greater security than any form of pin. In April 2017, Mastercard trialled these cards in South Africa, with more trials beginning in Bulgaria & plenty more happening this year - Visa is trying the cards out in Cyprus. This should be implemented in the UK within the next couple of years! The technology behind it is called "EMV" (Euro Pay, Mastercard & Visa) which stores a user's info on the card's chip, with the card being powered when entered into a card reader. Trial users have had to get their fingerprints scanned at their local bank, for it to be saved on the database. However, Bob Reany implies that the card could be made in a way that users can set their fingerprint on the card itself. This will not only revolutionise the way in which we make payments, but could also prevent the 10's of millions of pounds that has been stolen from card fraud in the UK in the past few years. Adapted from Wired UK's Matt Burgess (2018) & an article from The Conversation.

  • If Only They Knew Charles Burns - The Apprentice UK 2017 Candidate

From Tesco worker to successful entrepreneur! Charles Burns went from working at Tesco to dabbling in many business ventures such as management consultancy, a comparison website & potentially Lord Sugar’s next Apprentice! If Only They Knew had the pleasure of speaking to Charles, who shared the challenges he has faced in his journey as an entrepreneur as well as his tip for young entrepreneurs. What Made Charles Want to Become an Entrepreneur? In his audition for The Apprentice, Charle said he was the “most entrepreneurial person you will ever meet”, so we asked him what it was that made him want to become an entrepreneur - to which Charles responded: "Growing up in a family business environment meant that I was always exposed to business. Every dinner table would be filled with constant of chatter about our family business or political, social, economic issues of the day that would/could have an impact on the business community. So I would say my entrepreneurial spirit was born there” What is Charles Top Tip for Young Entrepreneurs? At age 24, Charles is still very young but we wondered if he had faced any challenges in the business world and what his top tip for young entrepreneurs would be. “I certainly am young in the grand scheme of things and I have overcome many hurdles to get to where I am, my biggest piece of advice would be that you must not let failure be a burden, rather a marker that you have tried something and are one step closer to achieving your goals. I would also say that as clichéd as it sounds, age is but a number" "I initially struggled when I was tasked with managing 70+ people for Tesco at age 18, earning the respect at such a young age is certainly difficult but it can be done if you are prepared to work with those around you to gain the respect in the first place rather than speaking from some ivory tower and expecting people to follow you“ What is Charles Ideal Task on The Apprentice? Charles said that his ideal task on The Apprentice was the task in which the candidates had to "source a number of products, often very unusual items from all across London for the best price possible. This task really tests your negotiation skills and practical skills as you have to both navigate around the city effectively and also deduce what it is you need to find” If Only They Knew wish Charles the best of luck with his business journey.

  • Unmanned taxi drones!

Unmanned 'taxi' drone was successfully tested in Saudi Arabia as part of a ceremony for the Dubai crown prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed. For the moment, the taxi ('Volocopter') is a 2 seater vehicle with eighteen rotors & lasts up to 30 minutes in the air. The future goal is to have an Uber-like platform that allows users to order a ride at their nearest 'Voloport'. There are also plans from Uber themselves & several other famous faces in the business world to develop their own programmes similar to this. HH Sheikh Hamdan of the Dubai government states “This is another testament to our commitment to driving positive change. We are constantly exploring opportunities to serve the community and advance the prosperity and happiness of society". It is exciting to see where this leads to, with more advanced drone projects (such as more common drone deliveries) and developments such as this, there will be plenty of change coming to the way we live our lives in the near future.
